Eh Poh Nim on Singapore's 938LIVE

Like most, if not all, other authors, I like to google my books to find out what readers are saying about them. That's how I stumbled upon this little review on Singapore's 938LIVE radio.

What is 938LIVE? It "gets you talking as Singapore's only all news and talk radio station. We'll give you all you need to know about What's In, What's On and What's Up in Singapore round the clock." The Write Stuff appears under its English @ Work project in support of the Speak Good English Movement.

THE WRITE STUFF
Do you wear suspenders?: The wordy tales of Eh Poh Nim
By Lydia Teh

Eh Poh Nim is a woman on a mission. Poh Nim, a character created by author, Lydia Teh, loves the English language so much that she has taken it upon herself to introduce new words and phrases to the world. She wants to spread the joy of learning English through her daily interactions.

Written in a conversational tone, we listen in as Poh Nim introduces new words to anyone within earshot. She uses words and phrases cleverly, providing witty explanations for their usage. For example, she refers to a plus-sized American colleague who had just arrived at the airport as "Big Bertha". Big Berthas refer to the huge German guns that were used to shell Paris in World War I.

Short and sweet.

Surely that's just as short and sweet as the book Lydia. Great read, no doubt. :-)

Hi Hi Hi! (I sound really enthusiastic.) Finally found Aidyl Het's blog. I'm a serious bookworm. So one day, someone introduced me to your book and bought one for me - the Eh Poh Nim book. I hesitated when I saw where the book was published - not in UK, neither America, absolutely not Australia, but in Malaysia. I thought the English was gonna be all mangled up. I read it in the end and IT WAS AWESOME!!! I really like it when the story flows so smoothly and the words in bold just fall into places. Well, after I got addicted, I begged mum to buy "Honk! If you're a Malaysian" and "Life's Like That". She glared at me as my final exam are just around the corner. She bought it in the end and I curi-curi read "Honk! If you're a Malaysian". It's really strange that everything you write about is exactly what happens in my house - especially the stationeries that fly. I'm going on to the "Live's Like That". Thanks for all the books you've published! It's superb!

Ps. Found some mistakes in the book, though. No offence. But is there an editor?

Hi Roo Meen, thank you for your enthusiastic comment. It's always nice to gain new fans. I'm glad you like my books. Yes, there is an editor for my books, but sometimes mistakes slip past despite our best intention. If you care to do so, I'd appreciate if you could email me at tehlydia@yahoo.com to point out the errors you spotted.

Hi Sueda, thanks for dropping by to tell me that my 'fan club' has increased by one more member :) Glad you like Eh Poh Nim. Sorry she's been rather quiet in The Star's Mind our English of late as I'd been busy setting up a language centre (see my other blog). But Eh Poh Nim should be making an appearance in The Star soon.

Hey, Lydia. Were you in the Cambridge English Centre in Setia Alam recently? I think I spotted you...

Hi Ru Min, yes I was there. Why didn't you say hello? Were you taking your ESOL exam and if so, which level did you sit for?

Well, I wasn't sure if I was imagining things. I sat for the CAE level.
