I'm big already

A conversation with no. 3 recently :

I : Your test is coming up. Bring your books and we'll do some revision.

No. 3 : I'm big already. I can study on my own.

In my heart, I was yelling, Yippee!! No more sitting down with him and going through his Chinese, Science in Chinese and English, Maths in Chinese and English, BM, Moral. Freedom!! but I didn't vocalise it. Instead...

I : No, you're not too big! Bring your books! (Two reasons for saying this : This is what hubby would expect me to say and kiasuism rearing its ugly head.)

No. 3 grumbled and stomped off to get his books.

Next year he'll be in Year 3. I think I'll get some deliverance then because Year 3 Chinese may be too tough for me to handle. It'll take me ten minutes to look up a word and probably an hour to go through a short paragraph. Not the most efficient of coaching methods. I think I'll pass the buck over to no. 1 and 2. They've had six years of Chinese education.

Freedom! Until no. 4 goes to Year 1 in 2008. Then the cycle starts again...

Heheh Lydia, we always want to push them because it's very kiasu to do so :) Years ago, I contemplated sending at least one of my kids to Chinese school, but decided that I couldn't handle revision & homework time ... so no dice lah.

Sometime, we just need to let it go, they need freedom to choose, though, not all the time.

Pressure and Stress must not lay on our children, while, there's many way you can build close relationship with them, not necessary doing revison together..=)..cheers...

we regretted sending the children to arabic school at first because when they came back with homework, we couldnt help them. they cried, i cried! then, we started learning together. I am still with less than 10 words, while there is not turning back for them. I think my mind is too cluttered.

Do you know that I was most dilligent with my eldest up to yr 6. Then I let her go on her own. After that I learned to let the rest to manage themselves. Now no more energy but will always remind on and off, have you done the exercise, bla, bla...:)

Queen, nice to have you here again. Yep, Chinese school is real nose-grinder.
Dr. Prince, revision is definitely not quality time for me :), it's obligation!
Kak Teh, actually I also learned Chinese with my kids too.
p3p4, Takde no.5. Production stopped oredi. I hope they sing the song to me now.
Nadia, that's advantage of having big gap in between the kidslah.
Dr., Year 6! Plenty of stamina you have there. I usually let go about Year 3.
